Turn a photo into a diamond painting pattern
Diamond painting kits number their drills with DMC color codes, so this converter matches each cell to the nearest DMC color and gives it a symbol for the chart. Choose square drills (about 2.5 mm) or round drills (about 2.8 mm) and the canvas size follows from the width in drills.
- Width: 100 drills is about 25 cm with square drills; portraits look best from about 120 drills wide.
- Colors: 25 to 40 colors for photos; fewer colors makes a bolder, easier picture.
- The materials list adds 10% spare drills to every color; drills are small and some always go missing.
- Print the chart pages at actual size and check the symbols are readable before you transfer them.
What this pattern is for
The result is a chart and drill list you can use to plan a custom kit or to check a canvas. Printing your own adhesive canvas needs special materials; most people order a custom canvas from a kit maker and use the drill list to compare colors.
Common questions
Square or round drills?
Square drills butt up against each other for a fuller, mosaic-like finish; round drills are quicker to place and more forgiving. Pick the one your canvas is made for.
